MDS Periodontist

Dr. Anuja A. Parekh

The gum specialist at 3A Dental. Treats the tissue and bone that everything else in your mouth is anchored to, which is why implant cases here go through her before they go into anyone’s jaw.

What a periodontist does

Teeth get the attention. Gums decide the outcome.

Periodontics is specialist gum care: the tissue, the ligament and the bone that hold every tooth in place. It is the least glamorous part of dentistry and the part that quietly determines whether anything else lasts.

Bleeding when you brush is not normal, however common it is. Gums that have receded expose root surface that decays faster than enamel. Bone lost around a tooth does not grow back on its own. And a beautiful crown on a tooth with failing support is a short-term crown.

An MDS in periodontics is three additional years on exactly this, after the five that make you a dentist.

What Dr. Anuja treats

  • Bleeding gums and gingivitis
  • Gum disease with bone loss
  • Deep cleaning and root planing
  • Gum surgery and recession correction
  • Bone grafting to prepare implant sites
  • Gum health during pregnancy
  • Gum care for patients with diabetes
  • Long-term maintenance after treatment

Why it matters for implants

Somebody has to prepare the ground.

An implant needs bone to hold it and healthy gum to seal around it. When a tooth has been missing for years, both of those have usually shrunk.

In a lot of clinics this is where a case gets refused, or referred out, or quietly attempted without the groundwork. Here it is where Dr. Anuja starts. Bone grafting, site preparation and treating any active gum disease all happen before a single implant is placed.

Having the periodontist and the prosthodontist in the same practice, planning the same case together, is the difference between an implant that survives and an implant that is placed.

Deposits removed from the gum line

A real case treated at 3A Dental. The brown build-up along the gum margin is what keeps gums inflamed and bone receding.

Two groups she sees often

Pregnancy and diabetes both show up in the gums.

01

Gum change in pregnancy

Hormonal change during pregnancy makes gums react far more strongly to the same amount of plaque. Bleeding, swelling and tenderness are common and frightening, and they are usually manageable with a cleaning and better technique rather than anything dramatic.

Dental treatment during pregnancy is safe when it is planned properly, and untreated gum infection is not a neutral thing to carry to term. If you are pregnant and your gums have changed, it is worth a visit rather than a wait.

02

Gums and diabetes

The relationship runs both ways. Poorly controlled blood sugar makes gum disease worse and harder to treat, and active gum infection makes blood sugar harder to control.

For diabetic patients, gum maintenance is not cosmetic housekeeping. It is part of managing the condition, and it is one of the few parts a dentist can help with directly.
