Forty years in one lane
He has treated three generations of the same families.
In 1983 Girgaon had fewer clinics and far more walk-ins. Dr. Ashok opened a practice off the 8th Khetwadi Lane and built it the slow way, one patient at a time, by being the person who did not hurt you.
Four decades later, a substantial share of the appointment book is people who first came as children, now bringing their own children, and in some cases their grandchildren. That is not a marketing statistic. It is what the reception diary actually looks like.
He still handles fillings, extractions, root canals and the everyday work that keeps a family practice running, and he still takes the nervous ones himself.

Senior patients ask for him by name, and usually have done for thirty years.
Why older patients ask for him
An unhurried appointment is its own kind of treatment.
Senior patients are often anxious for reasons that have nothing to do with the drill.
Lying back is uncomfortable. Hearing the instructions through a mask is hard. Getting in and out of the chair takes time nobody wants to be seen taking. A clinic running fifteen minute slots makes all of that worse.
Dr. Ashok has been managing exactly this for forty years, largely by not being in a hurry. Appointments run at the speed the patient moves. Explanations happen in Gujarati or Marathi if that is easier. The family member who came along stays in the room.
If you are trying to persuade a parent to see a dentist after a long gap, he is usually the right first appointment.

The handover that never quite happened
Two generations, still both working.
The usual story in a family practice is that the founder steps back as the next generation steps up. That has not happened here, and patients seem to prefer it that way.
Dr. Anuja brought specialist gum care into the practice. Dr. Amaey brought implants, digital planning and prosthodontics. Dr. Ashok kept the thing they were all built on, which is a clinic where people are not rushed and not sold to.
A patient can have an implant planned by a prosthodontist on Monday and a filling done by the man who treated their father on Thursday, in the same three rooms.
